Shannon Aerospace was founded with the Irish Government, Lufthansa and Swissair Technical Services. The goal was to start an overhaul line there for MD-80 and B-737/57 aircraft, but first the local workforce needed basic and type rated training for these airframes and therefore technical training set out to SNN for MD-80 theory courses. 1991 the first of Swissair’s MD-11-HB-IWA landed in Zurich. In Amsterdam the last maintenance training on Fokker-100’s took place. The Fokker's are all delivered by now, replacing the noisy DC-9-51’s.
In 1995 the first batch of the small Airbuses: A-321 were delivered to SR & OS. 1997 the 50th anniversary Year of Swissair’s first transatlantic flight was celebrated with a leased DC-4 from SAA, dubbed as HB-ILI and flying the GVA-JFK route once again via Shannon and Gander this summer. The company was also split into independent cost centers forming a holding and christened: SairGroup! Technical services now: SRTechnics; a name that later survived the core of the Group. 1998 Zurich Airport had an air display weekend, where the newest aircraft of Swissair’s fleet was introduced : the Airbus A-330-200. Later this Year an MD-11 (HB-IWF) crashed near Halifax-CDN with 229 fatalities. Austrian airlines ended the cooperation with the increasingly aggressive partner Swissair.
